One way to lower your caravan insurance premium, whether it's for a tourer, static caravan or park home, is to increase the security on it. But you need to make sure that the security measures you take are worthwhile and on the list to get you a discount.
Trackers
GPS devices which allow your caravan to be tracked if it's stolen have revolutionised the security of vehicles as well as caravans, although you're probably not going to bother putting one on a static caravan or park home.
These are the systems currently on our quote system:
- Target system
- Proactive system
- Tracker Monitor
- Metis GPS Alert
- Hal Locate tracker
- Phantom target tracker
- Electronic tracking device
- Phantom Pro-Active Tracker
- RAC Trackstar Pro-active tracker
- Car and Van Protect Pro-Active Tracker
- Thatcham Approved Q Tracker Unit
Bear in mind that it's a fast-changing market. So if you have a tracker that's not on this list, then phone us and we'll see if we can get the discount through for you.
Static security devices
This category includes anything that makes it harder to shift a caravan, so again these might not be so worthwhile for static caravans or park homes.
They range from posts to secure your caravan to wheel and hitchlocks. These are the items currently tied into our quote system:
- Hitch post
- Supermule
- 'Stop theft' tagging kit
- Wheelclamp and hitchlock
- Microtag security marking
- SmartWater Security Systems
- Hitchlock with a tamper device (see below)
If you have one of these you can instantly see the result on your premium by doing two quotes, one with and one without your security device.
Hitchlocks are very popular because of their effectiveness in preventing 'tow-away' thefts. The following products are specifically listed in our quote system:
- AL-KO Chassis Secure Compact Wheel lock
- Bulldog - MAX
- SAS Gridlock
- SAS Wheel Lock Diamond
- Full Stop Excalibur by Towsure
Once again, if you have a hitchlock not listed here, perhaps a new model, call us or email us to see if our insurance companies will recognise it and give the discount anyway.
Alarms
Anti-theft alarms will bring your caravan premium down but their effectiveness really depends on whether the people around you will take any notice of them. Definitely of interest to static caravan and park home owners as well as tourer owners, an alarm is very effective at moving thieves on to easier targets.
Our systems currently recognise a generic alarm system, a ""Sold Secure"" alarm, factory fitted alarms with PIRs and tilt and movement sensors. These will attract a discount on your premium price although it depends on the insurance company you select once you've seen your quotes.
Again you can try quotes with and without an alarm system selected to see what difference it makes to your quote.
Thiefbeaters
Finally we come to Thiefbeaters - a system almost in a class of it's own, although it shares some similarities with the SmartWater system mentioned above.
An invisible and unique ThiefBeaters ID code is applied to your caravan and other equipment in up to 60 different locations, making it impossible to remove. If it IS stolen it can be identified as such and returned to you.
Stay safe and secure
Of course the point of security devices isn't just to save money on your caravan insurance but to try and hold on to your possessions.
Think about the most likely threats to your caravan, whether it's a tourer, static or park home, then add the security products you need. For example, if you have a tourer that's kept on your drive when you aren't using it, a locking post on the drive, a wheel lock and a tracking system might be more effective than an alarm on it's own.
Either way, we hope that you never have to rely on any of these security products at all.
